All students at Vogler Dance Studios study tap dance. Initially,
tap is wonderful way for students to learn the counts of music
while dancing. Even though we all can "feel" the changes and
rhythm of music, breaking that music down in to
counts promotes understanding of its basic elements. It is impossible
to understand tap without counting 1 and a 2 and e uh 3 and
4, etc. When that counting skill transfers to ballet and baton
twirling it produces dancers and baton twirlers who can stay
on beat even when that beat may be esoteric.
Tap is history, America, and fun. Tap actually
has a limited vocabulary. Once a student has mastered about
eight fundamentals everything else builds on them. We just go
faster and faster. I will often combine tap dance with jazz
dance.
